It is rare, but occasionally, a unique restaurant emerges, showcasing a fresh perspective, creativity, and innovation, all while delivering delicious food. This is true for the Eastside La Frida Mexican Grill & Seafood on 22nd Street just east of Kolb.
Over the weekend, a friend and I decided to try it. My initial reaction? Wow! They made such a beautiful space in a not-so-beautiful part of town. Stuck between an auto glass storefront and a couple of auto repair shops, La Frida now shines bright after a refresh of a former Mariscos spot.
She boasts a vibrant, contemporary aesthetic that forces your eyes to scan the space, taking it all in -- until you see one of their drink creations. The drinks are gorgeous works of art! I ordered the "Moji Rivera" with rum, lavender soda, berries, lime, fresh mint, and brown sugar. And -- as pretty as it looked, it tasted just as amazing! It's the lavender soda that made it for me. My friend has the "Te Cielo" with Irish cream whiskey, horchata, rum, Amaretto, chai tea, caramel, cinnamon, and Anise Star. She said it reminded her of a delicious Kahlua drink.
As for the food, it did not disappoint! I ordered the Asada EspecTACOlares (I see what they did there!) When I try a new Mexican restaurant, I often try their basic asada tacos to create a taste baseline. If their asada is good, you can (usually) trust other good items are on the menu. If they can't do a good asada, there's little hope for other standouts on the menu.
But this asada was flavorful, tender, moist, and fresh off the grill. And, of course, that carne flavor perfectly married the tastes of the onions, cilantro, sweet pickled onions, and lime juice to compose an undeniably delightful meal. So now I can look forward to my second and third visits to explore their creative menu options further!
My friend decided upon the innovative Chicharron Steak appetizer that was also as beautiful to look at as it was to eat. I tried the meat, and I loved the crispy chunks of pork. Without my amazing social grace and table manners, I would have stolen all of her food!!
Overall, La Frida provided an excellent experience and a delightful meal. The standout for me was the Moji Rivera cocktail.
Despite the abundance of great Mexican food options in Tucson and the many places still on my list to try, I'm eagerly anticipating my return to La Frida.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on this new gem!
