The Wooden Nickel opened its doors in 1947 and has operated under this name since. The building itself is even older, having initially been used as a bunkhouse for railroad workers and then the home for the Tucson Polish American club. In 1984, the Varela family purchased the business, and the tavern has been operated by his family for 40 years now.
I have passed by but did not even consider trying it out.
That is until I heard that a former TPD officer had said that the Wooden Nickle has the best burgers in town. Of course, those being some of my favorite words, I had to try it.
All the parking spots were full (a good sign of a great place). My first impression was just as I expected -- except busier; a crowd doesn't come out for a crappy place with crappy food, so I was excited to understand for myself.
Finding a place to sit took a minute, and my friend and I finally cozied up to the bar and placed our order right away.
I had read about the Cowboy Burger and thought that must be what that officer was talking about, so I ordered it.
I saw the Tucson Foodie (@TucsonFoodie) sign next to where we sat, which can only mean great things!
My drink (margarita) was okay, but the burger was great. If you like BBQ burgers, you have to try this one! It has cheddar cheese, huge slices of bacon, sweet-tangy BBQ sauce, and at least one ginormous onion ring (it was dark!). The bun was great, but the thick, perfectly cooked patty was the crowning glory.
The service was outstanding all night. Although it was a louder environment, my friend and I stayed for quite a while, talking and enjoying the lively atmosphere.
Of course, the swanky downtown restaurants are excellent here. Still, you can also appreciate a hasn't-been-remodeled-for-forever neighborhood tavern, especially one serving the community so well for over forty years.
So, is it the best burger in town? Possibly! Definitely in the top tier.
Do yourself a favor, slip on your boots (or, if you're like me, your fake Birkenstocks), and visit Wooden Nickle. You won't be disappointed.
